Most Memorable Moments...

Post by DC_Wolfe » June 30th, 2019, 5:13 pm

What were some of your most memorable moments in aviation?

One of my stories:

We were late. Very late. Everything was in chaos and we were scrambling to get things back on schedule.

During this moment, a Flight Attendant sent a young person up the flight deck. She told us, “He loves airplanes!”

Despite our delay, we paused and entertained the young man who was very young. We showed him the cockpit, the bells, and whistles, and thought nothing more of it, despite our hurry and being late and spending time with him made us even more late and probably annoyed a few first class passengers.

Being a pilot for TWA, we didn’t think twice about the additional delay that this moment caused our departure. Of course, the Captain later received a minor reprimand from our newly acquired airline, but he didn’t care after he understood the whole story, despite the corporation not caring about our circumstance and removing his pay for the delay. You see, our newly acquired airline didn’t know the whole story…

When we arrived at our destination, the mother of the young man joined us in the cockpit.

“Thank you,” she said. “For taking the time with my son.”

“Of course,” we replied. “It was our pleasure.”

“No,” she said. “You don’t understand. You really made his day. He spent the whole flight talking nothing but his visit to the cockpit.”

“We were happy to do it,” we responded.

“Yes,” she said. “But you don’t understand. We just came from his Father’s funeral. He spoke of nothing else but his visit to the cockpit today. Thank you giving him something else to talk about this day.”

To that, we had nothing to say.

You never know when the smallest kindest can mean the most to someone.
